Fascinating Facts:

Just before midnight on June 5, 1944, a small force of glider-borne British soldiers took off from RAF Tarrant Rushton in Dorset. Their mission, codenamed Operation Deadstick, made them the first Allied soldiers to land on German-occupied French soil on D-Day.

The daring plan aimed to capture two bridges northwest of Caen to prevent German counterattacks from threatening the landing beaches on the Normandy Coast. The mission was a success, with the glider force achieving total surprise. The men of the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry and Royal Engineers seized both bridges intact.
